How to Sew Mason Jar Cozies & Ways to Gift Them

I think this may be one of my best ideas ever. I was eating my overnight oats recently, which I prepare in mason jars, and I thought how nice it would be if I had a jar cozy so my hand didn’t get cold while eating my oats. The rest is history. I got to work and designed an easy-to-sew mason jar cozy!

But I didn’t stop there because then I thought, “what if this were insulated and what if it could keep my beer cold or my soup hot?” So I bought some Insul-Brite and made insulated jar cozies next.

But then I thought, “Sometimes I drink my water out of the large jar, so do I need a cozy for my big jars too?” The answer was yes, I obviously needed my large jars to be cozy as well, so you guessed it, I designed a larger size jar cozy too.

Sew Insulated Mason Jar Cozies in 2 Sizes

I created a video walkthrough for sewing the mason jar cozies. You will also need to grab the pattern from my shop, or here on Etsy. This method of making cozies requires no fussy circular pieces! The bottom is made by boxing the corners and the pattern has been tried and tested many times over in my own sewing room and by countless others who have already purchased and made the pattern, so be assured the cozies fit perfectly on a pint size and a quart size jar respectively.

Of course it’s important in this case to print the pattern pieces at 100% scale so that your cozies turn out the correct size for your mason jars.

The video tutorial also includes instructions for making a quilt-as-you-go cozy, like my large sized ones in the photos. These are the cozies that are in heavy rotation at my house. My son tends to steal mine constantly, so I plan to make him one of his own for Christmas in fabrics he’ll like better.

Here is the video walkthrough of this project:

Ways to Use and Gift Mason Jar Cozies

The above video includes a ton of ways to gift these cozies! As I made them, I kept thinking of more ways to use them and since I like to pair handmade gifts with other items, I thought of many ways these cozies would make great gifts. Here are some:

  • Gift a mason jar of flowers to a hostess or a new mom with a cozy and jar she can use later.

  • Gift a jar and cozy with a cookbook of soup or salad in a jar recipes for people who take lunches to work.

  • Gift jars and cozies with some great craft beer.

  • Gift a sourdough starter in a large jar with your best sourdough making tips and tricks.

  • Gift a jar and cozy with a tea diffuser lid and some good loose leaf tea.

Those are just a few of the gifting ideas I came up with, but many people had even more ideas in the comments under the YouTube video, so those are worth reading too!

I also love to purchase the plastic lids for my own jars. I often make sauces and salad dressings in jars to store in the fridge, as well as things like overnight oats and salads, and the plastic lids last a very long time and won’t rust like the metal ones too. They also make straw lids , which are great for taking my water or smoothie on the go. (I just stumbled on these lids too and wouldn’t they be perfect for salad dressings?? Adding them to my Christmas list now).

I hope you enjoy this project and it’s given you some great ideas for gifting this Christmas season and beyond! Don’t forget to grab the PDF pattern from my shop, or from Etsy if you prefer.

Happy Sewing!
