Flower Power Pillow Tutorial
My teen daughter spotted a pink velvet flower shaped throw pillow in a photo somewhere recently and asked if I could make one for her room. Um, of course I could! I made her a velvet flower pillow AND THEN I went on to design a patchwork version using the fat quarters I’d just received from my Annie’s subscription. I loved how it turned it so much that I went ahead and perfected the pattern piece, filmed a tutorial for YouTube, and added the printable PDF pattern for these cute flower pillows to my shop, so you can learn how to sew a flower pillow too!

This Flower Power Pillow pattern is turning out to be so versatile! Fo my third version, I decided to use the coolest striped fabric I’d gotten from Hobby Lobby. I couldn’t find other fabrics in my stash to match it so I decided to make all six petals with the stripes and it’s for sure my favorite! the big yellow covered button looks so cute on the black and white back of that version too.
You can watch the video tutorial to learn how to make your own DIY flower pillow, but you’ll also need to grab the printable version of this tutorial from my shop, so you’ll have the pattern piece you’ll need to make it.
The printable pattern includes instructions for making either a solid pillow like my velvet one, of the pieced version with different fabrics.
You’ll need a few things for this project. First, fabric, of course. I struggled to find velvet for a decent price, but did finally find some on Amazon that was a great price. I bought one yard and I think I could squeeze a second pillow out of the leftover! It comes in other colors too.
Fat quarter collections are a perfect way to match fabrics for the patchwork flower pillows! I don’t know why, but I rarely buy fabrics that match each other, so it’s hard for me to find coordinating fabrics in my stash. Annie’s fat quarter kit club has opened my eyes to the benefit of having some collections on hand! You can sign up and get 50% off of your first order. You won’t be sorry, I LOVE my subscription!
This pattern really lends itself to versatility! I LOVE how the striped one turned out and I love the back of it equally much. You can get very creative with fabric choices here. Plaids and stripes can be turned in so many different ways!
I love how the covered buttons look on all these pillows. If you’ve never used a covered button kit before, it’s super easy! The video tutorial shows you how it’s done. You can get covered button kits in all sizes and they come with the little tools you need (they’re nothing scary, haha).
The pillow will take about a bag and a half of stuffing, but you can also harvest stuffing from a pillow you are not longer using (that’s what I did for one of mine!)
I hope you enjoy this project! These pillow would be so great for your kids’ or teen’s room, for gifts, or for your own home decor! If you’d like more pillow tutorials, check out my ruffled throw pillow tutorial here :)
Cheers!
