Changing Pants! My 2020 Sewing Goal
I was one of the last to hop on the skinny jeans bandwagon. When they first came onto the scene (a decade ago, maybe??) I thought they looked ridiculous on everyone, and especially ridiculous on me. Ha! Once they started improving the fits and the fabrics and low rise went away (hopefully forever), I got on board and have had skinny jeans in my wardrobe for the last several years. BUT, times they are a-changing and I have noticed that jeans and pants trends are changing right along with them.
Not only are more styles of jeans coming to the forefront in fashion, skinny jeans may very well be on their way out, according to this Elle article. I for one could not be happier. While I do like my skinny jeans, I find it’s very difficult to shop for them and to find the right fit. I guess I’d call it a love/hate relationship. I have athletic legs (don’t confuse that with my actually being athletic, hahaha) and I tend to prefer straight styles and boyfriend jeans, and I still miss the book cut years, if I’m being totally honest.

I’m excited to try some new styles of jeans in the coming season, but I’m even more excited to try some new styles of trousers. Yes, trousers! I’ll admit, I enjoy a good, cheesy Christmas movie and The Knight Before Christmas, a new Netflix original fit the bill for me recently and I found myself seriously digging Vanessa Hudgens’ fashion in that movie! Not only was her coat collection drool worthy, she wore some of the coolest pants! I couldn’t find very many photos, but here are a couple stills:
This movie really got me thinking about sewing pants and since conquering pants fitting has been on my sewing bucket list for awhile now, I’ve decided pants will be my sewing goal for 2020. Last year it was dancewear and since I did actually accomplish that goal of learning to sew dancewear in 2019, I’m encouraged that I can conquer pants too!
So, here are some patterns I’ve found with modern designs that are similar to the styles worn by Vanessa in the movie and that I’d like to experiment with in the New Year. These are all Big 4 patterns, since I haven’t spent the time yet to look at all the indies. If you are aware of any, let me know!
As for jeans, I haven’t sewn a pair of jeans and I honestly don’t see that in my near future. I’ll never say never, though! In the meantime, here are some styles I’d like to try:
These Slim Straight Fit Jeans
These High Rise Stovepipe Jeans
These Vintage High Waist Jeans
These midrise stright crop jeans
What are your thoughts on all the changing pants and jeans trends?? I’d love to hear them in the comments!
Don’t stress, make a plan!
