10 of the Best Alphabet Letter Quilt Block Patterns
I recently had the MOST FUN making a mini quilt with words on it, so I just had to share the resource I used to make it, along with a list of great pattern and book options for sewing your own alphabet letter quilt blocks.
Just like there are a bajillion different fonts on the Internet, there are a ton of different fonts and ways of making word quilts, so I’ll list plenty of patterns for sewing letters here, so you can choose what you like best and what fits your quilt project. Some of these patterns are FREE, some are easy to download pdf patterns, and others are in book form.

The Ten Best Alphabet Letter Quilt Block Patterns
Patchwork Alphabet, a How-To Guide by All Well Workshop
This is the guide I used for my Be Here Now quilt and I highly recommend it! The guide comes in the form of a “zine” booklet, which you can order as a pdf or print to be mailed to you. I chose the latter. Each letter is made up of a combination of just a few easy-to-sew blocks, making this a super fast way to put your quilty thoughts into words!
Ribbon Alphabet by Patch and Dot
I LOVE this pattern and it’s my next choice for alphabet quilt block patterns if I decide to try another font. These sweet ribbon letters are so satisfying because there is room for creativity and experimentation when pairing fabrics together to give that folded ribbon effect. So cool.
Best Day Ever FREE Alphabet Pattern
Here’s a free one for you! This is a great free alphabet pattern that tells you exactly how big to cut the pieces for each letter. It seems a little more complicated than the All Well Patchwork Alphabet guide that I used, but it is free and will get the job done.
Highway Gothic Lowercase Alphabet
Of all the patterns on Etsy, I chose to include this one because it’s lowercase and because it’s paper pieced. I love the look of lowercase letters and I used to make my birthday banner and name banners all in lowercase, because I liked the look. If you love paper piecing like I do, this will be a fun option to try. Of course, you can also buy the uppercase of this pattern from the same seller.
Moda FREE Pieced Alphabet PDF Pattern
Another free option, Moda’s Spell it with Fabric pattern is a free printable PDF. There are some fabulous things around the web that quilters have made with this pattern, and with Moda’s stellar reputation, you can’t go wrong with this one.
Alphablocks Modern Alphabet
Im completely smitten with this pattern because it’s such a unique font for a quilted alphabet. I love those bold colors and just think it adds something very cool and different to the quilted letter blocks that are out there.
Quilt Talk Book
Here is a book of paper pieced alphabet letters and I like this option because it includes lowercase variations and project ideas. It’s a great resource!
Out of the Box with Easy Blocks
This was one of the first quilting books I ever bought and I’m including it here because it includes instructions for free piecing wonky letters! If you love free piecing, meaning creating quilt blocks without a pattern, but adding fabric in a wonky way to create a block, this book is a great guide for creating words in this way.
Stitch Your Story
This book includes 6 complete alphabets! If you’re a book person and want several options in one resource, this is the book for you. It even includes a bunch of projects you can use your new alphabet quilting skills on that aren’t just quilts.
Easy Alphabet Quilt Pattern by Missouri Star
You really can’t go wrong with a pattern put out my Missouri Star Quilting. This alphabet pattern is made to be sewn with 2.5” strips, making it jelly roll friendly! This is a printed pattern, so if that’s your style over PDF patterns, give this one a look. The pattern is for the large quilt shown in the photo, but it wouldn’t be hard to make the letters individually and make them say whatever you’d like.
Text It! Quilts and Pillows with Something to Say
I’m including this book because it has something for everyone. Most of the techniques found here are for appliqued alphabets, sewn with a variety of techniques, “including fusible, bias-strip, and needle-turn applique, plus English paper piecing”. The projects found inside are modern and fun!
