10 Quilt Block of the Month Clubs to Join in 2022

One of my most visited blog posts last year was my list of 10 quilt block of the month clubs you could join in on, so it was a no brainer to write a similar post for 2022. I had an even easier time this year finding Block of the Month opportunities, so I hope you’ll find something here to join in on! It’s still only January, so now’s the right time to pick one and get started.

A Block of the Month club usually works like this: A quilt designer, blogger, quilt shop, or whatever, releases a set of quilt block patterns, one block at a time over the course of a year. So at the end of the year, you’ll have enough blocks to put a quilt together! The blocks are usually kept a secret until each month’s release, and I find that very fun. I love not knowing what the whole thing will look like until it all comes together! At the end, usually the designer or website will have several ideas for putting the quilt together with instructions for adding sashing, finishing, etc …

Last year I started working on a BOM with Civil War Quilts, but I confess, I did not finish. I opened my pattern shop in June and those projects kept me very busy, so I just wasn’t in a place where I could focus on a quilt project. I did finish the first two blocks, though, and I have a really good idea of how to use those blocks for a different project, which I’ll definitely create a video tutorial for, so look for that in the coming months! The journal covers I made recently are another great way to use single quilt blocks, though. I don’t think anyone needs to feel guilt over not finishing an entire quilt. There are a ton of small quilt project ideas that aren’t quilts, so I hope you don’t let the fear of not finishing stop you from trying one of these quilt block clubs this year!

I did, however, on a whim, join a shorter 12 week quilt block club and I somehow managed to finish that one! It was hosted by Riley Blake Designs and I have a finished quilt top that’s just waiting for quilting. I was proud of myself for finishing that and I like the fabrics and colors that I chose for it. I already have backing fabric, so I’ll get to this soon. I hope it will be a cuddly one for my living room couch.

10 Quilt Block of the Moth Clubs You Can Join for 2022

1. A Quilting Life Quilt Block of the Month This sampler style BOM would be a good one for beginners, since there is no applique or paper piecing involved, AND because she includes video tutorials for each block on her YouTube channel, which I know is very helpful for many people.

2. Fat Quarter Shop hosts a mystery quilt BOM each year and each block is designed by a Moda designer.

3. Join Stitched In Color for a modern take on a sample quilt this year. This one is so intriguing, it’s the one I would join if I were going to commit to one!

4. This Kitchen Sink 2022 Quilt-a-long by Sew Can She looks so fun. And this one is FREE!

5. Sarah Fielke offers a few options for Quilt-A-Longs each year. These quilts are more intricate and definitely heirloom pieces, so they cost a bit more than the others, but these quilts are beautiful!

6. Join in on a FREE Block of the Month club at Buttermilk Basin. If modern quilting designs aren’t your thing, you may like this sweet traditional option. It looks like you could learn some new skills with this one too.

7. Riley Blake Designs hosts the Quilt Block Challenge that resulted in my finished quilt top last year and they are back for 2022 with a new 12 week challenge. I enjoyed the printable instructions and ease of use, it’s all very well done.

8. I really like the design of the Polka Dot Chair’s Sparkle More quilt block challenge! If you’re not big on surprises and want to see what you’re getting into ahead of time, pick this one.

9. Nancy Zieman Designs has come up with a mystery BOM club using batiks, which I’m sure will be beautiful!

10. I looooove this quilt! During Quiet Time is offering a paper pieced Apple Cider BOM quilt, which you can purchase with or without video walkthroughs. Whether you’re experienced with paper piecing or brand new to it, this quilt is a beauty and would be a great way to practice or learn this skill. (Paper piecing is one of my favorite things).

I know I said I don’t plan to make time for a BOM this year, but I also tend to get the quilting bug at very random times. I find quilting very relaxing and so good for clearing the mind and cleansing the palette, if you will. So, who knows, maybe I’ll bring this post up later this year and get to work on one!
