New! Coffee Shop Ornaments, a PDF Sewing Pattern

I’ll tell you what, I’ve been siting on the idea for little handmade coffee cup Christmas ornaments for a long time! I decided this was the year and I finally did it. Not just a coffee ornament, though! This new PDF sewing pattern can be made into a DIY matcha ornament, a pink drink, a Frappuccino, whatever your drink of choice!

Sewn Christmas ornaments make the best little gifts for friends and family. Every year, I make a batch of a cute new ornaments because you know there are always those circumstances when a gifty gift would be too much, but you want to do a “little something”. Ornaments are my go-to “little something”. These coffee ornaments are just perfect for that because everyone has a favorite drink and you can customize these coffee shop ornaments to your recipients’ tastes! It’s sure to make them feel special, whether they’re a Starbucks loyalist or prefer their local barista.

You can purchase this new pattern in my pattern shop, or on Etsy if you prefer. I’d consider this pattern slightly more intermediate than most of my patterns for reasons I’ll explain in just a sec, but if you’re a beginner, don’t be afraid to give it a try! As always, I’ve made a complete video walk through of this project, so that will help you if you get stuck.

How to Sew Coffee Cup Christmas Ornaments, Video Tutorial

Materials for the Coffee Shop Ornaments:

You need scraps of cotton fabrics in the colors of your drink of choice, and some scraps of felt. I usually prefer wool felt for these kinds of projects, but I was having the hardest time finding wool felt in white! The white I ordered arrived and was definitely a cream color, but whipped cream needs to be white white. So I used the premium felt sheets from Hobby Lobby, which is a nicer, thicker felt than the regular felt sheets. It worked very nicely! But since the felt is encased in the vinyl, any felt is fine. You’ll also need the clear vinyl fabric and some green and white pieces of ribbon for the straw and hanger. And also tissue paper

Sewing with Vinyl Fabric:

Let’s chat about that vinyl! This is the part that makes this project a little bit more intermediate. You can’t place pins in vinyl because they’ll leave permanent holes. I recommend some Wonder Clips for this purpose. If you don’t have those, try alligator clips or even paper clips in a pinch.

The issue with sewing with vinyl is that it’s rather sticky. The machine needs to be able to move it through evenly without sticking to the presser foot on top or the feed dogs on the bottom, so here are some methods for making sure that happens:

  • Place tissue paper under your project as you sew. You’ll sew right through it and then tear it off in the end. Easy Peasy. This takes care of the underside. Then for the top side …

  • Use a Teflon foot for your sewing machine. I don’t have one of these, but I hear they’re great!

  • Use a walking foot for your sewing machine. This is what I do. The walking foot grabs the vinyl and moves it through.

  • In the absence of either of those feet, try sticking washi tape to the bottom of your presser foot. This should turn it into a makeshift Teflon foot, letting the vinyl glide through without sticking.

  • Lastly, in a pinch, you can sandwich your project between layers of waxed paper, one on top and one on bottom. It’s easier to see through than tissue paper, but sewing the clear vinyl still might be hard through the waxed paper unless you have excellent eye sight!

Ok, I think that’s all you need! Head to the shop and grab the Coffee Shop Ornament PDF sewing pattern and get started! And as always, I would love to see any ornaments you make with this pattern! Tag me on Instagram @pincutsew or shoot me an email.

Cheers!
