Modern Quilted Coasters Sewing Tutorial
I have a very fun little gifty project to share with you today! My aunt’s birthday is coming up and I love sewing gifts for her because she’s the kind who really loves and cherishes handmade presents. Since we’re in the middle of the longest, hardest-to-plan move in the history of military moves (exaggeration, but I’m all in my feelings about it), I talked myself out of the more time consuming ideas I was having and got inspired to make her a set of quilted coasters.
I created a video tutorial for you while I was at it, for how to sew these modern quilted fabric coasters with fun novelty fabrics. You’ll learn how to piece the fronts, quilt them and then how to sew a quilt binding by machine (no hand sewing, hooray!) Watch the video below!
AND, if you’d prefer a printable version of this pattern, you can purchase that in my shop. Then you’ll have it on hand to make over and over again (did I mention these make great gifts?)

These coasters make great use of fun novelty fabrics, the kind you always buy because they’re just SO cute, but never really know what to do with? Yeah, those. I opened my fabric drawer and these owls just sang to me. You’ll want to be sure and choose fabrics with pictures or motifs that can fit into a three inch square.
Here are some fun choices!
As usual here at Pin, Cut, Sew, I aim to help beginners learn to sew, so this is a beginner friendly video tutorial. If you’re a pro already, I’ll just post the quick measurements I used right under the video so you can get down to business. And don’t forget, you can buy a more convenient printable version here for just a few dollars.
Here’s the video! Enjoy.
So, here are the details:
I fussy cut my owls into a 3” square. The borders, I cut to 1”. The block is put together in a basic log cabin style. Then I made a tiny quilt sandwich and quilted around the owl block. Usually, I sew binding the more traditional way, but for little things like this, I don’t like to hand sew. So I tried the machine binding method and it worked beautifully! Watch the video if you want to see how to do it. It was counterintuitive to me, but made total sense after my mom explained it to me.
If you’re new to quilting and don’t have the tools I used in the video, here is a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler. You’ll also need a walking foot for your sewing machine. You may be able to get away without using one with something this little, but if you catch the quilting bug, you’ll definitely need one.
I tied this stack of coasters up with a ribbon and it’s all ready to stick in the mail to my aunt! I know she’ll love them. My daughter has been asking for some coasters for her room, so once we get this house sold, I might make those next. I’ll need some sewing therapy after this weekend of house showings, ha!
Cheers :)
